Canada's International Student Surge and Decline: Rethinking Pedagogy in a Changing Higher Education Landscape

Educators and researchers Keith Connell and Suzanne M. Connell have published a new scholarly chapter in the recently released book International Student Engagement in Post-Secondary Education, edited by Dr. Clayton Smith and published by IGI Global Scientific Publishing.

Canada's International Student Surge and Decline: Rethinking Pedagogy in a Changing Higher Education Landscape, examines the dramatic rise and recent decline of international student enrolment in Canada and explores the implications for higher education institutions, faculty, and students. Drawing on current research, policy analysis, and practical experience, the chapter argues that colleges and universities must move beyond enrolment management strategies and invest in culturally sustaining pedagogical practices that better support diverse student populations.

The chapter explores how faculty increasingly serve as cultural mediators in multilingual and multicultural classrooms, often undertaking significant but largely unrecognized pedagogical labour. It further examines the relationship between international student investment, institutional accountability, mental health, educational equity, and the growing need for innovative teaching practices in an era of policy uncertainty and demographic change.
